How to Draw Wall-E

Drawing this Disney character, Wall-E, is a little bit different then drawing other characters. This is because you will have to be more geometrically correct. You will be dealing with shapes rather then figures. This gives you the chance at a different side of drawing if you regularly draw other Disney characters. Every artist is a little different in how they approach a drawing, but here we will talk about some ideas in how to approach drawing Wall-E. You may be able to incorporate these ideas into your current methods.

If you are new to drawing you can try starting with a grid drawing. To start this you want to draw a grid over a picture that you are using as a reference. Then draw the same grid over your paper, but very light so you can then erase it. Make this grid larger then the picture but the same scale, whatever size you want your drawing to be is the size your grid should be. As a beginner this will allow you to copy the image as close as possible. Even if you are an advanced artist you can use this as a trail run for the first time you draw a character that is a little out of your normal range. This will allow you to get comfortable with all the features of the new character.

How to Draw Wall-E

Wall-E is a small robot and you want to be sure that you are getting the “boxy” format correct. He has bolts that hold his frame together, and tracks that he rides on. Each of these features have a different texture. So with all of this you have a few things you need to be thinking of as you draw Wall-E. You can start by drawing an outline of the character to use as a blueprint so to speak. This will give you something to grow on. Or you can focus on one area at a time. Do what works best for you and your drawing style. Then start adding the major details, such as the eyes, the lettering on his body, and the strips on his arms. Once you have these things outlined you can then start on the fine details, like the rusting and cracks.

The get the finer details you will need to really use some various pencil techniques. Using graphite pencils will give you the best results. There are a variety of shades, this will aid in shading and line thickness. Some of the graphite leads smear easier then others. You can use q-tips, drawing erasers and many other household items to create different effects. Experiment and see what works best for you.
